SoundBio Lab is looking for people interested in serving on our working Board of Directors. This is a great opportunity to help shape hands-on community science in Seattle. Please note that this is an unpaid volunteer position. We are a working board, which means our board members provide strategic leadership while also building out and supporting our programs, operations, fundraising, volunteer engagement, and organizational systems. We are especially interested in connecting with people who are excited to: Build and strengthen our volunteer programs by improving how we recruit, engage, and support our volunteers. Strengthen our scientific community by providing scientific leadership and mentorship, fostering collaborations and partnerships, and helping make community science more accessible, impactful, and sustainable.

Meet our new Community Programs Coordinator, Maya
|
|
We’re excited to introduce Maya, our new Community Programs Coordinator! She’s already hit the ground running, planning and coordinating Sound Bio’s outreach opportunities. Maya is a molecular biologist with experience in cellular biology and environmental science labs, studying DNA damage in single-celled ciliates and snow algae biodiversity. She has worked alongside citizen scientists and educators to develop educational materials for and teach a variety of subjects. |

Maya is interested in all types of science communication, but especially the intersection of art and science, and how visuals can be used to better communicate scientific concepts to a range of audiences. In her free time, Maya enjoys reading, hand lettering, singing along to musical theater, and is always doing her best to keep her houseplants happy. Join us as we create glowing bacteria-based paints and use them to make living microbial masterpieces within a petri dish. Looking for inspiration? Not convinced bacteria makes for high art? Genetic Engineering 101: Sunday, July 26, 6-8 pm

Learn the basics of bacterial transformation: the process by which foreign DNA is taken into a cell. This simple yet powerful technique is often used to make large amounts of valuable proteins like insulin or modify the genetic makeup of a cell to carry out a new or improved function. Our free public Biosensors Community Project sessions continue through the summer. Join us on Fridays from 4-6 pm as we explore how bioluminescent organisms can be used as biosensors to detect heavy metals and other contaminants. Follow us on Slack on #biosensors!
