Synthetic Biology Course Starts Thursday, March 12

There are still a few spots left in our new Introduction to Synthetic Biology course. This dynamic, hands-on course introduces students to synthetic biology through a real-world molecular biology workflow. Learn to manipulate, transform, and express recombinant DNA in living cells, and gain practical experience with core molecular biology techniques, including PCR, cloning, bacterial transformation, and DNA sequence analysis.

Biosensor Community Project Starting in April
|

Join us next month for the launch of the Biosensors Community Project. Together, we will explore using bioluminescent organisms across the tree of life for toxicity monitoring and create low-cost, easy-to-use kits for local water and soil testing. Details will be posted on our website and Slack. This project is funded in part by a Public Participation Grant from the Washington State Department of Ecology.

Saturday, April 4: Molecular Scissors A hands-on workshop on using restriction enzymes to manipulate DNA. We recommend taking the Intro to PCR workshop first, though beginners are welcome!

Join SoundBio Lab at the annual STEAM Exploration Night at Federal Way High School! We’ll demo Elephant Toothpaste, using yeast to reduce hydrogen peroxide into water and oxygen to create a safe foam explosion. Participants can try on PPE and discuss its importance in lab safety. Please arrive by 4:30 p.m. to set up. Families start arriving at 6. Email melanie@sound.bio or Slack #volunteers and mention that you want to help with this event.

Our Monday sessions at Big Picture have been on pause for the past two weeks due to student presentations. On March 9th, the Puget Sound Clean Air Agency will join us for their first guest seminar, returning for a second guest seminar workshop in a couple of weeks. Throughout February, we hosted several fun and engaging hands-on workshops at the lab: Painting with Bacteria, Liquid Biopsy, and Strawberry DNA Extraction. Participants practiced pipetting skills, set up PCR reactions, ran gels, extracted DNA, and created their own living masterpieces in petri dishes. We also visited Fred Hutch for a campus and lab tour, giving attendees a unique glimpse into the groundbreaking research happening at the center. Thanks to everyone who joined us!

In addition, SoundBio joined Madrona K-8’s STEM Night for the fourth year in a row! This year, we held two interactive workshops to demonstrate yeast biology: Elephant Toothpaste and Yeast Air Balloons. We ran these two experiments throughout the night for the elementary students and their families.
