Lab Skills 101: Extract DNA from Bacteria

  • SoundBio Lab 1100 Northeast 47th Street #103 Seattle, WA, 98105 (map)
A square flyer that reads "Lab Skills 101: Extract DNA from Bacteria" above a cartoon picture of two bacteria and a test tube. An arrow is pointing from the plasmid DNA in one bacteria to one copy of the same plasmid among several in the test tube.

Extracting and purifying plasmid DNA from bacteria, or mini-prepping, is an essential lab technique for molecular biology. Mini-prepping enables fast and inexpensive DNA purification from live cells - a first step for any genetic engineering project and a power tool in any molecular biologist’s skillset. Beginners welcome!
