Lab Skills Course: Introduction to Synthetic Biology (6 of 6)

  • SoundBio Lab 1100 Northeast 47th Street #103 Seattle, WA, 98105 (map)

The Key to HACKING Biology, in the PALM of Your Hand.

Sessions will be held every Thursday evening from March 12 to April 16, 5:00 to 7:30 pm.
This dynamic, hands-on course introduces students to synthetic biology through a real-world molecular biology workflow. By assembling a plasmid encoding a fluorescent protein, students will learn to manipulate, transform, and express recombinant DNA in living cells. Through guided laboratory activities, participants will gain practical experience with core molecular biology techniques, including PCR, cloning, bacterial transformation, and DNA sequence analysis. By the end of this 6-week course, students will have both the skills and background to kickstart their own synthetic biology experiments and projects.

In the course, you will learn:

  • Micropipetting and general laboratory practices

  • Polymerase chain reaction (PCR)

  • Gel electrophoresis

  • DNA extraction and preparation

  • Molecular Cloning (Golden Gate assembly)

  • Bacterial transformation and plating

  • Basic bacterial cell culturing

  • DNA sequence analysis using Benchling
