Our lab hosts an Opentrons Flex, a lab automation robot that can perform pipetting, PCR, bacterial culturing and monitoring, protein purification, and more. As automation becomes more common across research, biotechnology, and clinical laboratories, understanding how these systems work is an increasingly valuable skill. Opentrons’ visual Protocol Designer is an approachable way to start creating automated lab workflows - no code or prior lab automation experience required!
In this hands-on workshop, we’ll:
Explore the benefits and limitations of laboratory automation
Discuss what the Opentrons Flex components do and how they’re used in the lab
Use Protocol Designer to build and run a simulated minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) assay, automating a process we perform manually in our DIY Antibacterial workshop
Each participant needs to bring a laptop for the hands-on portion of this workshop. Protocol Designer does not work with smartphones.
No prior experience with laboratory automation, programming, or MIC assays required. Be prepared to spend 45-60 minutes looking at a screen. Beginners welcome!
